Port 25 Blocking Policy Print

  • 1

Overview

To maintain network integrity, reduce abuse, and protect IP reputation, outbound TCP port 25 (SMTP) is blocked by default on all dedicated servers.

Port 25 is commonly targeted for spam and malicious email activity. Blocking it by default helps prevent unauthorized or misconfigured mail servers from sending unsolicited email, which can lead to IP blacklisting and service disruption.

What This Means

  • All new dedicated servers will have outbound port 25 blocked by default.

  • Inbound port 25 may also be restricted depending on network policies.

  • Clients will not be able to send email directly via SMTP (port 25) unless access is explicitly granted.

Alternatives

Before requesting port 25 access, consider using:

  • SMTP submission ports (587 or 465) with authentication

  • Third-party email services (e.g., transactional email providers)

These options are more secure and are not blocked.

Requesting Port 25 Unblock

If you require port 25 access, you must submit a request through a support ticket. Your request must include:

  1. Use Case
A clear explanation of why port 25 is required and why alternatives (such as port 587 or third-party services) are not suitable.

  2. Mail Server Details
Information about your mail server setup, including:

    • Mail server software (e.g., Postfix, Exim)

    • Sending practices (transactional, internal, etc.)

    • Expected email volume

  3. Configuration Proof
Evidence that your mail server is properly configured, including:

    • Valid reverse DNS (PTR record)

    • Matching hostname and HELO/EHLO

    • SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records configured

    • Open relay protections enabled

  4. Compliance Agreement
Explicit confirmation that you agree to:

    • Comply with our Terms of Service

    • Follow all applicable laws and regulations

    • Not send unsolicited or bulk spam email

    • Maintain proper security and abuse prevention measures

Review Process

  • Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Additional information may be requested before approval.

  • Approval is not guaranteed.

Ongoing Monitoring

Approved servers are subject to ongoing monitoring. If abuse, spam, or misconfiguration is detected:

  • Port 25 access may be immediately revoked

  • The server may be suspended

  • Additional action may be taken per our Terms of Service

Important Notes

  • Any evidence of spam or abuse will result in immediate action.

  • Failure to maintain proper mail server configuration may lead to access removal.

  • Clients are fully responsible for activity originating from their servers.

Summary

Port 25 is blocked by default to protect both our network and our clients. Access is only granted to users who demonstrate a legitimate need and a properly configured, compliant mail server.
